Police:Even though Tottori Prefecture is one of the safest prefectures in Japan, there are still crimes and accidents every day. You never know when you might get involved in an accident or crime; please take the following precautions.

(1) How to lessen your chances of getting involved in a crime
1. When you leave your home or are asleep, make sure that all doors and windows are locked.
2. Do not keep all of your valuables in one location.
3. Always make sure that your bike, motorcycle, or car is locked.
4. Do not leave valuable items inside your car or on your bike.
5. Do not walk alone late at night or on poorly lit streets.
(2) Traffic Rules of Japan
(To protect yourself from traffic accidents)
At traffic lights, green means "go", yellow means "caution", and red means "stop".
Cars must keep to the left side of the road and pedestrians to the right.
1. When walking
When crossing a street or an intersection, cross only at a crosswalk with a green light, looking left and right to make sure it is safe before you cross.
Wear reflective clothing when walking along roads at night.
2. When riding a bicycle
In principle, bike riders will be treated as cars.
Attach reflective material to your bicycle, so it may be easily seen.
3. When driving or riding in a car
Always fasten your seatbelt.
Do not use cellular phones while driving.
Driving after consumption of alcohol is prohibited and severely punished under law.
It is compulsory that all children under the age of 6 be fastened in a child seat.
Child seats may be borrowed from the Tottori Prefecture Traffic Safety Association. Certain local municipality offices provide assistance in the borrowing or purchasing of child seats.

(3) Police stations and chuzaisho(where policemen live)
are located close to where the local residents live to keep the neighborhoods safe. At a police station, several officers on shifts work together, but at a chuzaisho, there is only one police officer, who lives there with his family and is on duty at all times. The policemen that work at the police stations or the chuzaisho not only patrol the area, investigate crimes, conduct traffic control, give directions, and deal with lost items, but also visit homes and businesses to discuss any problems the residents may have or to listen to any suggestions the residents have for the police or opinions they have about the police. They also give out information on preventive methods of getting involved in crimes and accidents.
